Law firm of Firm Law LLP Sole proprietorship, partnerships, and corporations are just a few different organization entities that people use when starting a new business. One can change from one business type into another using proper paperwork and by abiding state rules and regulations. There are various factors to consider when starting a business such as the nature of the business being started, the business type, investments or funding, and employees. First, we will examine what business type is better suited for the Law Firm of Firm Law to operate. Then, we will consider the pros and cons of said business type to ensure proper fit. After, we will discuss the issue of investments and stock issuances, if required. Lastly, we will cover the policies and standards needed for employees to follow in our business structure. Gene Forrester, one of the main characters in John Knowles's novel, A Separate Peace should have taken this advice. Throughout the novel, Gene acted artificially, disguising his true self. He lived in fear of people finding out what he was really like. Phineas, Gene's best friend and the other main character in this novel, on the other hand, acted naturally around people. He was not afraid of people seeing who he really was. In John Knowles's novel, A Separate Peace, Gene acted artificially, while Phineas acted naturally. To begin with, Gene Forrester acted artificially. There are several instances throughout the novel where Gene disguises himself or is influenced by artificial things. Towards the beginning of the novel Gene tells the reader that he was a half inch taller than Finny ("I had been claiming five feet nine inches before he became my roommate..." (Gene Pg. 8) and that Finny weighed ten pounds more than he did. "He weighed a hundred and fifty pounds, a galling ten pounds more than I did..." (Gene Pg. 8) Because Gene mentioned those facts, the reader can tell that even having a slight height and weight advantage or disadvantage to Finny were important to him. What people, especially Finny, thought about him worried him. "...I would have lost face with Phineas, and that would have been unthinkable." (Gene Pg. 26) Later in the novel, when Finny wanted to wear a pink shirt to school, Gene told him it would make him look like a "fairy". "Pink! It makes you look like a fairy!' (Gene Pg. 17) Gene knew that people might question Finny's masculinity and ridicule him so he spoke up. Gene would have never taken such a risk as wearing a pink shirt because it was not socially acceptable at Devon School. This again points out Gene's obsession with what people thought of him. Gene had a cautious, competitive nature and let grades and trying to outdo Finny run his life. Gantt Charts A common technique for scheduling construction activities is the Gantt chart, named after the developer Henry Laurence Gantt, as mentioned in the introduction section. The Gantt chart lists the construction tasks that need to be performed down a single column, generally in the order in which they are to be carried out, along with a second column indicating the length of time required to complete each task. At the top of the chart, dates for the construction project are noted in a horizontal row. To the right of each task a line/bar indicates the starting date to the completion date for that task. All tasks in the first column are charted in this manner across the rows of the chart, with the bar for each task beginning at the earliest possible starting date. Many tasks must be completed in sequence, requiring the completion of one activity before the next can be started, although some tasks may be completed independently of other work and can be charted when the work is most convenient. The charting of activities allows the project manager to identify critical points in the construction schedule and provides the opportunity to adjust the tasks to meet schedule demands. For example the steel needs to be designed and ordered before it can be delivered to site and the padstones it sits on would need to be in place and the concrete cured before the steelwork could be erected. To maximise time efficiency these tasks will run concurrently (i.e. padstones can be installed while steel is fabricated and before it is delivered to site) these links between tasks can be seen on the Gantt chart. Critical Path Analysis (CPA) Similar to the Gantt chart the critical path analysis is a project-management technique that lays out all the activities needed to complete a task, the time it will take to complete each activity and the relationships between the activities. Also called the critical path method, critical path analysis can help predict whether a project can be completed on time and can be used to predict problems within the program both before starting it and as it progresses, to keep the projects completion on track and ensure that deliverables are ready on time. Advancing from the Gantt chart on the next page is the project critical path (highlighted in red on the subsequent page). Any fluctuations to these dates would have a knock on effect to the overall programming of the project meaning time would need to be made up elsewhere on the remaining tasks, or possible weekend overtime working would need to be implemented to ensure the project was completed by the March 29th deadline. Project Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT) As projects become even more complex and unpredictable, more complex scheduling methods become appropriate. Methods such as the program evaluation and review technique combines critical path analysis with probability to identify completion dates that are optimistic, pessimistic, and most likely. Such scheduling techniques are not applicable to every project, but may be used in large construction projects that are likely to be influenced by nature or human factors. Examples include projects that are to be completed during unseasonable weather conditions or grading in an area that may be delayed due to unknown underground conditions. PERT planning involves the following steps that are described below. Identify the specific activities and milestones. The activities are the tasks required to complete a project. The milestones are the events marking the beginning and the end of one or more activities. Using a work break down structure is helpful to list the tasks that in later steps can be expanded to include information on sequence and duration. Determine the proper sequence of the activities. This step may be combined with the task identification step above since the activity sequence is evident for some tasks. Furthermore, the company boasted of offering the most reliable schedule and made profits consistently over the years unlike many of its counterparts. Company Strategy The Southwest Airlines has applied several strategies to see its success in the competitive market environment. Some of its strategies included providing hostesses with attractive clothing, offering free drinks to passengers, using an attractive tagline, and increasing its operational capacity without having to buy more planes initially. The company also realised its main market segments (business travellers and price sensitive leisure travellers) and maintained lower turnaround times compared to its competitors (Thompson & Gamble, 2011, p.279). Yet again, the company applied a different pricing strategy by incorporating different fare prices for the on-peak and off-peak periods. Essentially, the airline pursued a strategy that revolved around low cost, no frills and low prices (Thompson & Gamble, 2011, p .285). The company presented a customer care service that was dedicated to customer satisfaction with a fun loving attitude and happy face. The Southwest Airlines low cost-low price and no delays strategy emerged a winning strategy going by the remarkable results it has achieved over the years. As previously noted, the company consistently made profits and its customer and revenue base kept growing against those of its counterparts. The strategy is lovely considering that it focuses on the very needs of the targeted market segments without forgetting about the employees (Thompson & Gamble, 2011). The company maintains a culture of keeping employees happy and motivated so that they can offer quality services. Furthermore, the company maintains a culture of excellent customer service. The company also maintains a culture of hard work, innovativeness, and teamwork. With the departure of Herb Kelleher, Gary Kelly is bound to face a number of challenges with respect to maintaining the company’s cultural commitments. For one, the company’s reputation has been tarnished following some accident and safety incidences which may affect the morale
